Hello! I've just returned from OpenWorld and after attending Paul's session on web development there, I am thoroughly intrigued by FormSpider. The session did make it sound easy to use but I haven't coded in Forms since '97 although I currently write PL/SQL and am an OCP DBA. I know little to nothing about the mid-tier (Apache) and am not sure what I need to do. Here is where I'm starting: Windows 7 client talking to a RHEL 5.x w/ Apache running. Database is Oracle 11gR2. I've just downloaded the FormSpider windows .exe. I plan on installing it on my windows client (it's where I do my development w/ SQL Developer, sqlplus, etc.). What then? Are there step by step instructions on how to install and how to use the API calls that I can use/learn? Thanks! I hope this works because ApEx and ADF Faces look inefficient for a single DBA/Developer like me. -Thom |

We have many tutorials and videos to get you started. The learning center is by no means complete but we add new tutorials every week. Thanks Yalim. I know very little about the mid-tier pieces. I'm not sure what I need to do to get Apache Tomcat to communicate w/ the database layer. Any simple advice you can provide to get me going would be great. Also, is the FormSpider software a client piece or is there a server component? Thanks, Thom |

Hello again! I don't want to double post but we're stuck trying to get the IDE to launch. We get errors that we cannot resolve or understand. We installed Apache Tomcat on a Linux VM. We ran the .jar on the Linux web server (including moving the .war file). We then ran the windows installer on my Windows 7 client and did not check the Mid Tier checkbox (but did the other 3). We successfully ran the Database and DB IDE components as well as installed the IDE locally on my system. Launching the IDE on my Windows 7 PC fails to work. After reviewing the Linux installation steps, there are a few steps that look like they need manual effort (Installing database components, Installing Formspider IDE sections)... we assumed these were done by the Windows Installer remotely. I did look to see if the Oracle directory was created and it was not. Could it be that we've messed up the steps? what should we do? Thanks, Thom |

Hi Thom, Did you use the Linux Installer to install the middle tier? From what you explained, it seems like you followed the installation guide to install the middle tier and used the Windows Installer to install the Database and the Client. Is this correct? The Linux installation Guide is something we wrote before we released a Linux Installer. So the document is obsolete now except for the curious mind that wants to know how we install Formspider. We suspect that there is a disconnect between the middle tier and the database or the client and the middle tier. Could you please try the Linux Installer and reinstall the middle tier? The Installer will ask you the connection information for the Database. Similarly, the Windows Installer should ask for the connection information of the middle tier. |
